LOOK: Storm surge reported in Batangas #QuintaPH

LIPA, Batangas (FYT, October 26, 2020) — Typhoon Quinta (Molave) battered a coastal town in Batangas with maximum winds of 125 km/h and over a meter of storm surge that ripped small houses and resort kiosks to pieces, knocked out power to hundreds of residents, and inundated the coastline.

Photos taken by volunteers from the Lipa Archdiocesan Social Action Commission (LASAC) on Monday morning, October 26, show the rise in water level in the coastal village of Banalo in Lobo, Batangas

“Dumadaluyong ang tubing at mataas na alon. Never before pa raw nilang nakita ‘yung ganoon kataas na alon,” LASAC’s Renbrandt Tangonan told FYT, citing reports from the group’s volunteers in the community.

LASAC also reported another storm surge that occurred in Agoncillo town.

No casualties have been reported to date based on the group’s monitoring.

Pagasa is already looking into the reports, according to weather forecaster Jun Galang weathers, noting that on Tuesday night, the state weather bureau warned that a storm surge of up to 2 meters might be experienced over the coastal areas of Batangas.

A storm surge is the abnormal rise in sea level that occurs during tropical cyclones, according to Pagasa. It is caused by strong winds and low atmospheric pressures produced by tropical cyclones.

As of 5:00 pm, Monday, only the provinces of Batangas, Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, and the northern portion of Antique have been placed under Signal Number 1.

Typhoon Quinta was last spotted 310 km west of Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro and continues to head west towards West Philippine Seas at 25 km/h.

The typhoon, which made landfall 5 times in Albay, Quezon, Marinduque, and Oriental Mindoro from Sunday to Monday, is expected to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility Tuesday morning, October 27.

About 20 tropical cyclones hit the Philippines each year. Quinta is the country’s 17th tropical cyclone for 2020. — FYT
